VASTU SHASTRA INTRODUCTION

What is vastu shastra?

In Sanskrit, Vastu means to build environment and a surrounding and Shastra means a perfect system or a by-laws.  Provides information regarding shelter. Vastu Shastra tells the methods for building any kind of shelter in the environment  to get the combined positive effects of the five elements called Panch Mahabhuta. Vastu Shastra encompasses the techniques to decide directions, placement and positioning of various aspects related to building or any shelter, to bless the owner with health, wealth, prosperity and happiness.

In Vasthu Sastra, the house is compared to the human body. Since man is nothing but a mass of vibrating energy, so is the building. For a dweller to enjoy health, wealth, peace and prosperity, he or she must respect the cosmic energies in the respective quadrants. The direction and quadrant of the elements are determined via a compass. 

Vastu Purush, an imaginary person in the form of God called Vastu Purush who governs each house. Vastu Purush is present in every human dwelling and is responsible for good or bad fortune. Therefore Vastu Purush should to be appeased for the betterment of house and its inhabitants. The Vastu Purusha is the presiding deity of any site. Usually he is depicted as lying on it with the head in the northeast and legs in the southwest but he keeps changing position throughout the year.

 Vastu elaborates the basic sense of designing the architecture of buildings and specific areas of a building such as rooms, fenestrations, gates etc. It primarily instructs how to maintain the best equilibrium of the five elements (Earth Water, Sun, Air & Space) in a building and to make best use of their effects to energize the metal & physical energies of inhabitants.

The scholars at Vaidic times wrote down texts that show influence of various zodiac bodies on each other like sun, moon, planets as well as light and heat on the earth. They also described about the various scientific and geographical factors such as atmosphere, wind, directions, gravitational forces, Electro magnetic field, etc

Panch Mahabhutas greatly influences life on earth. Vasthu Sastra is based on the arrangements and balancing of the five elements in their proper order and proportions. These ancient sciences are still applicable in modern times.Vasthu Sastra is not magic, superstition or a religion, although some of its advocates may consider it part of their religious rituals.

FIVE ELEMENTS ( PANCHA MAHABHUTAS ) 

They are as follows:

Space (Aakasam)

Space is most expanded in term of its spread and volume. The unending part of the universe beyond the earth's atmosphere in which all other planets and stars exist is known as space also referred as outer space. 

Fire (Agni)

Fire contains heat energy and is the basis of all energy including solar energy, earth's inner energy, atomic energy, thermal energy and human energy.

Air 

Air is supposed to be life supporting for all living organism. Though very light in nature, it is considered heavier than sun. 

Water 

Rain, river, seas and oceans all represent water. Water constitutes lives on earth and physical life is not possible without water.

Earth 

Earth is said to be a part of sun and it provides space to the living and non-living organisms. 

The Panch Mahabhutas is closely associated with man and the environment. Going against them would lead to destruction. For example, a place or premise is purchased just after considering the monetary aspect and without paying any attention to its usefulness or harmfulness. Therefore, it is good for future to consider the dimensions according to the principles of Vastu Shastra. Indeed if the plot is purchased using the principles of Vastu Shastra, House Vaastu, Vastu Direction the all round growth definitely occurs and the owner gets peace and prosperity. However if the selection goes wrong, it may lead to health problems and financial losses. Mental peace is definitely assured if someone follows the principles of Vastu Shastra. All objects of this universe are made of five elements basically. These five basic elements are (1) Earth or Soil (2) Water (3) Fire (4) Air (5) Space ( Aakash ). Vaasthu sastra states that every energy has life and nothing in universe is left out without any vibration. Every material in the Universe radiates some energy at its own specific frequencies. This energy may be positive or negative. Positive energy is beneficial and negative is harmful. Out of the nine planets, our planet has life because of the presence of these five elements. 

MUHURAT & ITS SIGNIFICANCE

In Vaidic system, all the days, dates & time are classified in Muhurtas that provides details about useful and useless impacts of times and periods. Muhurtas decides the time to start any auspicious occasion. As for example, not ospicious period means the period or months when the Deities take their rest and willing to be calm and undisturbed. Therefore, this time is not advised to start digging of land or construction of buildings. The Muhurat have their own logics. For example, four months of rainy season are not very comfortable to start with a new construction related project work. In Muhurat, this four months period is thought to be the DEV SHAYAN period. The weather in this period also registers high humidity and rain. Again, only this season brings floods, muddy ways and water logging. The brick kilns are not operative during this period too. 

Vastu Application for Built-up Areas

Applying Vastu principles are feasible without demolition. There is a general opinion that Vastu correction cannot take place without demolition, but it is not the actual case.  Though Vastu application is extremely easy in the planning stage of a project, yet fully constructed buildings can also be modified using the principles of Vaastu

Venkateswara at Tirupati is found adhering to the principles of vastu shilpa shastra i.e. the main entrance is on the East, while the water tank is in the north-East and as such God is giving peace, prosperity and wealth to every one having darshana and by worshipping will be rich and desires will be fulfilled. They will be comfortable in their lives.

The other example is of Bhagwan "Sri Sri Sri Satya Sai Baba" of Puttaparthi. his abode is made at such a place where water flows in the North-Eastern direction and some hillocks are situated in the south-west. He is virtually considered to be a living God by many of his followers throughout the world. His disciples created a university, superspeciality hospital, drinking water facility for many villages in Ananthapur district aerodrome and sports grounds according to Vastu

MANDALA THEARY 

A site of any shape can be divided using the Pada Vinyasa. Sites are known by the number of divisions on each side. The types of mandalas with the corresponding names of sites is given below.

Sakala (1 square) corresponds to Eka-pada (single divided site) 

Pechaka (4 squares) corresponds to Dwi-pada (two divided site)
Pitha (9 squares) corresponds to Tri-pada (three divided site)
Mahaapitha (16 squares) corresponds to Chatush-pada (four divided site)
Upapitha (25 squares) corresponds to Pancha-pada (five divided site)
Ugrapitha (36 squares) corresponds to Shashtha-pada (six divided site)
Sthandila (49 squares) corresponds to sapta-pada (seven divided site)
Manduka/ Chandita (64 square) corresponds to Ashta-pada (eight divided site)
Paramasaayika (81 squares) corresponds to Nava-pada (nine divided site)
Aasana (100 squares) corresponds to Dasa-pada (ten divided site)

The amorphous center is considered beneficial to the worshippers, being a source of great energy. This could also be used for settlements. Center would cause too high a concentration of energy for human occupants. This is called Brahmasthana  is left unbuilt with rooms organised around.
In accordance with the position occupied by the gods in the mandala  guidelines are given for zoning of site and distribution of rooms in a building. Some of these are:
North- Kubera - Ruled by lord of wealth (Finance)
South- Yama - Ruled by lord of death – Yama (Damaging)
East- Indra - Ruled by the solar deity- Aditya  (Seeing the world)
West- Varuna - Ruled by lord of water (Physical)
Northeast {Eshanya} – Ruled by Shiva, prayer room
Southeast - Agni - Ruled by the fire deity – Agni  ( kitchen)
Northwest - Vayu - ruled by the god of winds ( bedroom )
Southwest - Pitru or Nairutya, Niruthi - Ruled by ancestors.
Center- Brahma - Ruled by the creator of the universe.
