HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid or impaired production of thyroid hormone) is a condition of insufficient thyroid hormone in the body. It develops when the thyroid gland fails to produce as much as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyroxine (T3) as the body needs. Since the main purpose of hormones produced by thyroid gland is to "run the body's metabolism," it is understandable that people with this hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid would have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism causing damage to organs and tissues of every part of the body and leading to life threatening complications.

Kidney stones, also called renal calculi, are solid concretions (crystal aggregations) of dissolved minerals in urine; calculi typically form inside the kidneys or bladder. The terms nephrolithiasis and urolithiasis refer to the presence of calculi in the kidneys and urinary tract, respectively. Renal stone or calculus or lithiasis is one of the most common diseases of the urinary tract. It occurs more frequently in men than in women and in whites than in blacks. It is rare in children. It shows a familial predisposition.

Urinary calculus is a stone-like body composed of urinary salts bound together by a colloid matrix of organic materials. It consists of a nucleus around which concentric layers of urinary salts aredeposited.  Calculus vary in size from as small as grains of sand to as large as a golf ball.Most calculi originate within the kidney and proceed distally, creating various degrees of urinary obstruction as they become lodged in narrow areas, including the ureteropelvic junction, pelvic brim, and ureterovesical junction. Location and quality of pain are related to position of the stone within the urinary tract. Severity of pain is related to the degree of obstruction, presence of ureteral spasm, and presence of any associated infection

Kidney stones (in medical terminology called as Renal Calculi or Urolithiasis) are hard masses that develop in the kidney or urinary tract .These masses are made up of crystals. They may contain many chemicals but usually are made up of calcium (with combination of oxalates or phosphates) and uric acid.

Men are usually more predisposed to having kidney stones and are more like to develop it as they enter into their 40.Hereditary factors also play a strong role. Hypercalciuria (where there is excess of calcium excreted in urine) is also genetic acquired factor which leads to frequent development of kidney stones. It is also true that once someone develops more than one stone he is likely to develop such stones more often.

The role of food in developing kidney stones is a debatable issue. . It is popular belief that avoiding food that is high in calcium is must in people who are suffering from stones; in reality this is not true. On the contrary, recent Studies have shown that having food high in calcium like dairy products may actually prevent calcium stones. Certain foods and medicines like (calcium based antacids) are known to promote the production of stones .If one has acidic urine avoiding foods like fish meat and poultry can help. People who tend to develop calcium oxalate stone and show oxalates in their urine may need to avoid or limit their intake of foods containing oxalates like: like Beet roots, chocolate, coffee, cola, nuts, spinach, strawberries, tea, and wheat bran.

Kidney stones can cause very severe pain which is caused when the stones obstruct the flow of urine or when they move in the ureter (ducts that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder). Pain caused by kidney stones occurs in the back or in the lower abdomen. It may extend to the groin area too. Passing of blood in urine can occur when the stone moves in the urinary tract. Kidney stones are clumps developed from solidified crystals in the kidney or urinary tract. When there is an imbalance in any of these substances, the crystals cluster together into stones. The size of the stone can be as small as a grain of sand to one as large as the size of a golf ball. The most commonly found kidney stone in humans is usually made of calcium oxalate. Other rare varieties of kidney stones include those made up of cystine, struvite (magnesium, ammonium and phosphate), calcium phosphate, uric acid, etc. Causes of Kidney stone formation:

Infection or obstruction may play a part in kidney stone formation. Sometimes they occur when the level of blood calcium is abnormally high. Occasionally, stones may develop when the blood level of uric acid is too high, usually from over consumption of meat. Excessive dietary intake of calcium and oxalate and low fluid intake have also been associated with formation of stones. In most cases, however the cause is not known. It has been found that certain persons are having a tendency of forming recurrent urinary stones. Even after treating successfully once, they tend to form stones again and again Certain foods may promote stone formation in people who are susceptible. This stone formation is enhanced when there is increased intake of calcium, calcium oxalate, uric acid or salt in our diet, with an inadequate intake of fluids. A positive family history (genetic tendency) also makes a person prone to kidney stone formation.

Certain foods that increase the risk for kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals include: Spinach, rhubarb, chocolate, peanuts, cocoa, beet, coffee, cola, nuts, strawberries, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, apple juice, soda (acidic and contains phosphorus), all types of tea, and berries.

Vomiting
A burning feeling when you urinate

Kidney stones can remain asymptomatic until they obstruct the flow of urine. When obstruction to the flow of urine occurs at some point of time, the patient starts experiencing acute symptoms.
